The 2025 U23 World Rowing Championships will begin tomorrow, 23 July, in Poznań, Poland. This year’s event marks a record-breaking entry, with 239 crews from 53 nations set to compete. Ireland will be represented by six crews, including Jack Gorman of Shandon Boat Club and Syracuse University, who will make his international debut at the championships.
BLW1x | Sophia Monahan
Sophia Monahan (Shandon Boat Club) will compete in the lightweight women’s single scull (LW1x). Monahan returns to the U23 World Championships after a top ten finish in the women’s double sculls in Canada last year. Strong competition is expected from the Greek and Italian crews, both of whom medalled at the 2024 U23 European Championships. The LW1x has ten entries, with heats leading directly to A and B Finals.

BW2x | Izzy Clements & Anna Keating
Izzy Clements (Tara Rowing Club & Edinburgh University Boat Club) and Anna Keating (Shannon Rowing Club) will race in the women’s double sculls (W2x). Clements brings valuable international experience, having finished fourth in the lightweight single scull (LW1x) at the 2025 Senior European Championships earlier this year. The Greek crew is expected to be a top contender, featuring Olympic bronze medallist Dimitra Kontou, who also claimed silver at the 2025 European Championships. The W2x event includes 17 entries, with heats progressing to a C Final and A/B Semi-Finals.

BM2x | Donagh Claffey & Martin O’Grady
Donagh Claffey and Martin O’Grady (University of Galway) will represent Ireland in the men’s double sculls (M2x). The reigning champions, Poland, return with a new crew, while Ireland will aim to build on last year’s success, when Adam Murphy and Brian Colsh claimed bronze. With 23 crews entered, this is one of the most competitive events of the championships. Heats will progress to C and D Finals, as well as A/B Semi-Finals.

BM4- | O’Neill, Gorman, Dunleavy & McDonnell
Sean O’Neill (University of Limerick Rowing Club), Jack Gorman (Shandon Boat Club/Syracuse), Luke Dunleavy (UCD Boat Club/Syracuse), and Fionn McDonnell (University of Limerick Rowing Club) will compete in the men’s four (M4-). Reigning champions Great Britain return with a new lineup, setting the stage for a highly competitive field. Fourteen crews are entered in the event, with heats progressing to a C Final and A/B Semi-Finals.

BW1x | Holly Davis
Holly Davis (Lee Valley Rowing Club) will represent Ireland in the women’s single scull (W1x). A standout junior athlete, Davis won silver in this event at the 2023 Junior World Championships and claimed bronze in the women’s double scull in 2021. She will face strong competition from Olympian Aurelia-Maxima Janzen of Switzerland, who is making her fifth appearance at the U23 World Championships. The event has attracted 17 entries, with progression through heats leading to a C Final and A/B Semi-Finals.

BM4x | Keeley, McLoughlin, O’Sullivan, & Rafferty
Donnacha Keeley, Shane McLoughlin, Ciaran O’Sullivan, and Shane Rafferty (all University of Galway Boat Club) will represent Ireland in the men’s quadruple sculls (M4x). The reigning champions from Poland return with one new crew member and are expected to be among the top contenders. Sixteen crews are entered in this event, with heats progressing to a C Final and A/B Semi-Finals.
