Research: Dietary Practices in Rowers https://www.rowingireland.ie/research-dietary-practices-in-rowers/ https://www.rowingireland.ie/research-dietary-practices-in-rowers/#respond Mon, 20 Jun 2022 11:45:14 +0000 https://www.rowingireland.ie/?p=16640 Please find the message below regarding some research being conducted by UCC Coach David Breen.

As part of my MSc Thesis titled ‘Specific Dietary Practices in Rowers and their association with Disordered Eating, I am looking for rowers aged between 15* and 30 years to complete a short survey. The survey is comprised of 3 parts:

1.       General information

2.       Dietary practices

3.       Disordered eating screen for athletes

The short survey will take roughly 10 minutes to complete, and all information provided by participants in this research project will be strictly confidential.

This research aims to further our knowledge of the dietary practices of rowers and investigate if there is an association between dietary adherence and disordered eating. It also aims to investigate the prevalence of disordered eating in rowers.

I would greatly appreciate any competitive rowers filling out my survey as well as sharing it amongst your own training circles. The survey can be found at the below link:

HERE

Any questions or concerns about this research can be directed to G0039012@atu.ie

*Any individuals who are under 18 will be required to gain parental consent before completing the survey.

Nutrition and Energy Availability Webinar – Recording and Resources https://www.rowingireland.ie/nutrition-and-energy-availability-webinar-recording-and-resources/ https://www.rowingireland.ie/nutrition-and-energy-availability-webinar-recording-and-resources/#respond Fri, 04 Feb 2022 12:36:05 +0000 https://www.rowingireland.ie/?p=14354 We were very lucky and really excited to have Prof. Sharon Madigan host a webinar on Wednesday night; it was a huge success with over 500 people registering to attend. If you couldn’t make the webinar live, don’t worry we made sure to record it so that you can catch up in your own time.

We learnt about context, keeping our energy above the line, what 5,000 calories looks like, and there were even appearances from Phil Doyle and Lydia Heaphy.

At the end of the session we left time for a Q&A, where Sharon gave tips around fuelling hungry teens, how to recognise low energy in yourself or someone else, and discussed returning to training after illness.

To accompany the webinar we have a number of resources that you might find useful. These include recipes for the food featured, infographics, contact details for reliable sources of information.

  • Nutrition and Energy Availability Webinar
  • Recipes
  • Infographics
  • Menstrual Health Webinar and infographic – Go with the Flow

Webinar – Nutrition and Energy Availability with Dr. Sharon Madigan https://www.rowingireland.ie/webinar-nutrition-and-energy-availability-with-dr-sharon-madigan/ https://www.rowingireland.ie/webinar-nutrition-and-energy-availability-with-dr-sharon-madigan/#respond Tue, 18 Jan 2022 16:00:00 +0000 https://www.rowingireland.ie/?p=14057 Last summer we ran a screening with our female members and found that 46% of those that responded were at risk of low energy availability. This can affect anyone (male and female), of any age, and at any level, and can have a negative impact on both sports performance and health (now and in the future).

In response to these findings, we have invited Dr. Sharon Madigan to host a webinar on energy availability. Sharon works with the Sport Ireland Institute and has a wealth of experience working with athletes of all levels, including our own High-Performance rowers. Having worked with athletes who have low energy availability, she is very aware of the warning signs and the effects it can have.

This webinar is free and open to all of our members, whether you are a competitive athlete, recreational rower, volunteer, coach or parent. It will take place over Zoom on Wednesday 2nd February at 7pm. To register, follow the link below.

Registration link – click here

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

Notes:

Energy availability is the amount of energy you have available for growth, development, and all other bodily functions after the energy required for exercise has been deducted.

Low energy availability occurs when someone doesn’t have enough energy to support these functions as well as their exercise or training

Calling all Female Rowers! https://www.rowingireland.ie/calling-all-female-rowers/ Fri, 09 Jul 2021 10:45:00 +0000 https://www.rowingireland.ie/?p=10526 We are committed to supporting our members, coaches and clubs to reach their potential and to achieve their goals in a safe and healthy way. Following our recent “Go with the Flow” webinar we are asking all of our female rowers to complete a short screening questionnaire that assesses energy availability1. The screening will help to identify anyone who is at risk of low energy availability2, which can increase your risk of injury, illness, and poor bone health.

This is a really important topic for anyone who is physically active, not just high-performance athletes. When the survey has closed you will receive your own individual results, while the group results will help us to shape future webinars, resources, and coach education materials to make sure that we provide our clubs and members with the right support.

To be eligible for the screening you should be:

  • Female
  • Regularly active (>2.5 hrs per week)
  • Aged 18yrs+
  • Not pregnant, diagnosed with a chronic illness, or menopausal

Click here to complete the screening questionnaire

There are 25 questions and it will take you less than 10 minutes to complete.

If you have any questions please contact Leanne Varley, Club Support Nutritionist via leanne.varley@rowingireland.ie.

Notes:

  1. 1. Energy availability is the amount of energy you have available for growth, development, and normal bodily function after the energy required for exercise has been deducted.
  2. 2. Low energy availability occurs when someone doesn’t have enough energy to support these functions as well as their exercise or training.
