We are aware of deliberate misinformation being distributed online regarding our High Performance trialling processes. This statement is to ensure the facts are clear. Any false or misleading claims will be addressed through the appropriate internal channels.
All athletes entering our trials are fully informed of the selection policies and processes prior to participation. The selection policies and daily schedule are emailed directly to all club coaches involved and are published on our website and social media ahead of the trials.
As outlined in our Beach Sprint Policy documents, the trial process takes place in two phases:
Phase 1 – Collection of baseline data from coastal athletes who are new to our High Performance database. This includes a 2000m ergometer score and a 2000m water trial — both internationally recognised metrics for evaluating rowers.
Phase 2 – Trialling on a beach using the same equipment, boats, and measurements used at international competitions. The key skill sets of running, boat entry/exit, and navigation are assessed in an open and fair process. All trial results are made available to all club coaches immediately after each event, as occurred following the recent 2000m water trial at the NRC.
Our approach is fully consistent with best practice worldwide. In accordance with the policy documents, athletes who achieve times matching those required to reach the quarter-finals at the World Championships will be selected. Junior athletes demonstrating the potential to become future Olympians at LA 2028 and Brisbane 2032 will be selected for the Coupe de la Jeunesse and Home Internationals, providing them with early exposure to international competition and enabling their development at the highest level.
We remain committed to transparency, fairness, and the pursuit of excellence in our High Performance programme.
