It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Steven McCann who passed away on the 18th August after a short illness.
We share below a message from Andrew Tubman on behalf of the Rowing Ireland Umpires Committee.
I first met Steven a number of years ago when he sat his umpires exam, and was impressed by how motivated he was to contribute to the sport.
Steven was a dedicated member of our umpiring team who we could always depend upon to support at regattas, including at the 1k Classic and Irish Rowing Championships each year. Steven was also chief umpire for Portadown Regatta, a club committee member and was instrumental in supporting the Northern Ireland branch with the setup of Craigavon Regatta. He was a strong support in advocating for the use of the facilities at Lough Rinn and could always be called upon to support events there.
Steven was much more than a skilled umpire, remembered for his ‘can do’ approach to anything that needed done at the course or club, and the kindness and dedication that he showed whilst doing so…and always with a smile. Steven was often the first to put his name forward when we needed an umpiring slot filled, or someone to mentor a new umpire. Portadown Boat Club have shared their personal tribute to Steven that talks of a ‘dependable club member, a cherished friend whose warmth, humour and readiness to help never faltered.’
On behalf of Rowing Ireland the umpires committee we offer our deepest thoughts and sympathies to Steven’s family and friends at this very difficult time. Rest in Peace, Steven.
Steven’s funeral service will take place at 11am on Friday 22nd August in Seagoe Parish Church.
