The Irish team gave the home crowd plenty to cheer about, producing several standout performances highlighted by a Gold Medal in the Junior Men’s Single (CJM1x) won by Jack Hehir (Rosscarbery RC). Congratulations to all crews, with Team Wales taking the overall championship title – the first Nation to win the Guin Batten Trophy away from home.

This year’s championship was proudly hosted by Loughros Point Rowing Club and Rowing Ireland, with crucial support from Swift Racing, who provided the boats. A huge thanks to everyone who made this event such a great success.

High Performance Trialling Beach Sprint Processes https://www.rowingireland.ie/high-performance-trialling-beach-sprint-processes/ https://www.rowingireland.ie/high-performance-trialling-beach-sprint-processes/#respond Tue, 12 Aug 2025 08:02:46 +0000 https://www.rowingireland.ie/?p=32443 We are aware of deliberate misinformation being distributed online regarding our High Performance trialling processes. This statement is to ensure the facts are clear. Any false or misleading claims will be addressed through the appropriate internal channels.

All athletes entering our trials are fully informed of the selection policies and processes prior to participation. The selection policies and daily schedule are emailed directly to all club coaches involved and are published on our website and social media ahead of the trials.

As outlined in our Beach Sprint Policy documents, the trial process takes place in two phases:

Phase 1 – Collection of baseline data from coastal athletes who are new to our High Performance database. This includes a 2000m ergometer score and a 2000m water trial — both internationally recognised metrics for evaluating rowers.

Phase 2 – Trialling on a beach using the same equipment, boats, and measurements used at international competitions. The key skill sets of running, boat entry/exit, and navigation are assessed in an open and fair process. All trial results are made available to all club coaches immediately after each event, as occurred following the recent 2000m water trial at the NRC.

Our approach is fully consistent with best practice worldwide. In accordance with the policy documents, athletes who achieve times matching those required to reach the quarter-finals at the World Championships will be selected. Junior athletes demonstrating the potential to become future Olympians at LA 2028 and Brisbane 2032 will be selected for the Coupe de la Jeunesse and Home Internationals, providing them with early exposure to international competition and enabling their development at the highest level.

We remain committed to transparency, fairness, and the pursuit of excellence in our High Performance programme.

Coastal Rowing Trials a Huge Success at the National Rowing Centre https://www.rowingireland.ie/coastal-rowing-trials-a-huge-success-at-the-national-rowing-centre/ https://www.rowingireland.ie/coastal-rowing-trials-a-huge-success-at-the-national-rowing-centre/#respond Mon, 11 Aug 2025 10:59:49 +0000 https://www.rowingireland.ie/?p=32436 The first phase of the High Performance coastal rowing trials took place at the National Rowing Centre on Saturday 9 August and proved to be a great success. Each athlete completed a 2K water trial in a coastal single, with the event running smoothly thanks to the efforts of volunteers and Rowing Ireland staff.

In the senior women’s category, Sophia Monahan of Shandon Boat Club, who recently represented Ireland in the A final at the U23 World Championships, posted the fastest time of the day. Her sister Isabella, returning from a strong showing at the Home Internationals, was the quickest in the junior women’s category.

The senior men’s event saw Donagh Claffey of University of Galway Boat Club, a medalist at the U23 World Championships, mark his first ever race in a coastal single with the top time in his grade. It was not only international athletes making an impression, as Luke Nixon of Kilmacsimon Rowing Club, this year’s Rowing Ireland Club of the Year, delivered a blistering performance to lead the junior men’s category.

The High Performance Selection Panel will now review the results before inviting selected athletes to Phase 2 of the trialling process.
