Rowing Ireland’s Research on Neurodivergence in Sports Coaching https://www.rowingireland.ie/rowing-irelands-research-on-neurodivergence-in-sports-coaching/ https://www.rowingireland.ie/rowing-irelands-research-on-neurodivergence-in-sports-coaching/#respond Mon, 31 Mar 2025 08:12:53 +0000 https://www.rowingireland.ie/?p=30168 Rowing Ireland has received funding from Sport Ireland’s Dormant Account Fund to research neurodivergence in sports coaching.

Seeking Participants: We are looking for coaches, or aspiring coaches, who are diagnosed or self-diagnosed with dyslexia, dyspraxia, autism, ADHD, or anxiety to participate in interviews. The interviews will be conducted via Teams and will last about 40 minutes. Participation is confidential, and information will be anonymized.

Background: Approximately 20% of the general population is neurodivergent, and an estimated 10-15% of neurodivergent individuals are involved in sports. We have identified ways to improve inclusion and support for neurodivergent coaches within coach education. However, there is a lack of specific research focused on the needs of neurodivergent sports coaches.

Research Goals: The research aims to develop a neuroinclusive approach to coach development, celebrating differences and providing support in challenging areas. This untapped research could benefit other national governing bodies (NGBs), especially those with many neurodivergent athletes and coaches.

Contact Information: The research will be led by Jo Aungiers, a Rowing Ireland Coach Developer, who has a strong interest in neurodivergence in sports. If you are interested in participating, please reach out via email jo@rowingireland.ie or WhatsApp at 0044 7711 708064.
